Tallahassee’s Toy Competition!

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

I have been so eager to share this new contest with you guys - but had to wait until a4A was officially closed. Now, it seems its all I am talking about!  I hope you will share in my enthusiasm for this next community project which will benefit our local Tallahassee Animal Shelter.

Did you take part in our Tea Cozy Competition last year? It was amazing!! We knitted & crocheted tea cozies - & everyone got really creative!! We hosted a silent auction for the tea cozies & raised $500 for PACE Center for Girls!!

This year is the same idea, only we’re making toys instead AND they’ll be auctioned off to raise money for the Animal Shelter Foundation - benefiting our local facility.
Not familiar with our local Animal Shelter? This is their mission statement:
“To make a positive difference in the lives of homeless animals by educating the community, encouraging responsible pet ownership and providing veterinary care and other resources to support the animals in the care of the Tallahassee Animal Service Center.”

There is a whole list of items they’d like for donations here: http://www.talgov.com/animals/wishlist.cfm - but what they could really use - like the rest of us - is MONEY. (they can also get money from donated empty printer cartridges, so if you have them, drop them off here & I’ll deliver!)

How to participate: Start thinking of a toy you’d like to knit or crochet using natural fiber yarns. You can use a pattern or design your own. These toys will be auctioned off, so your intent should be to create something that will draw the biggest interest, thus the biggest bid!

The dates have not been set in stone, but the auction will take place in November, so start thinking about your design now!!

If you need any help, there are several “toy” groups on ravelry & lots of other information on the web. Let me know if I can help in anyway.

Oh, by the way, this is totally a competition & while people will be able to “bid” on their favorites, they’ll also be able to “vote” for their favorites. And, yes, there will be trophies!!!

Just ask Susan O’Halloran how it feels to have the 1st place trophy from last year’s event!

It’s no great secret that I’m a pretty big geek.  I’m not going to go into it here, because it’s embarassing enough to confess these things to the anonymous internet, and so much worse when the internet is going to bring it up at the table in a few days.  With evil chuckles.

A long long time ago, right when I was transitioning out of Babysitter’s Club and Nancy Drew, someone gave me a book to read.  And I devoured it.  And I went into the library, and found the next one by that same author.  And then the next one.  And the next one.  And on and on it went, until I looked around and found that I was a fantasy fan.  I’m sure that this caused my parents much glee.  But more than that, that reading these books, about strong young women who refused to let anything get in the way of their ideas….well, it sort of made me a feminist, too.

So, I was in Atlanta last weekend, as some of you may be aware.  Like lemmings, in all their population density, my geek-people swarmed.  And it just so happened that one of the many guests in attendance was the author who is at least partially responsible for, at the very least, spurring my interest in books from childhood to adolescence, and probably a whole lot more.

 Tamora Pierce touched my sock!

So what did I do?  Reader…..I made her hold my sock.
