I’d just like to take a moment to share some of my favorite images from the recent TurtleDove Trunk Show, for those of you who live out of town, or just missed out. It was an amazing day!

Everyone loves Erica, especially when she shows up with mountains of gorgeous hand-dyed perfection.

Doors opened at 11 AM, and by noon, I’d estimate that about half the yarn had been spoken for. Erica says that she came in with 200 skeins of Alouette Lulu, Pigeon, Starling, Magpie, Rarebird Lace, Myna Lace, Flicker, and many more, and I’d estimate that she probably only took a very small fraction of that home with her at the end of the day.

I think we have to call this the Summer Edition, since she says that she plans to try and do this again later in the year, and on a recurring (seasonal, hopefully!) basis.

So, what did you guys think? Anything you didn’t get a chance to grab? Anything you want to rave, or to brag about? Anything you’d like Erica to bring back for another pass at a later date?

Can I just take a moment to brag about my acquisition? I owe a very special knitter a bunch of thanks for being so generous as to part with it so that I could scoop it up with my grabby little paws.

The air is thick and if you’re like me, you have been taken refuge indoors with your knitting. Swing by the shop to see our new arrivals and check out our class listings!

Elizabethan Scarf
Sunday, Aug. 29 and Sept. 5, 1-3pm

Maybe you’ve spotted this scarf in the shop hanging in the shop. This is an excellent introduction to simple lace work as well as short rows which are often used for shaping garments. If you need further enticement, this scarf requires no purling! Blocking nuances will also be discussed. Fun project for both the novice and veteran knitter and can be knit in any weight yarn.
$30, Participants should be comfortable with casting on and knitting.

Learn to Knit with Reagan
Saturday, August 21 and 28, 3-5pm

Get up and running with the basics - a perfect class for someone looking to restart knitting or for those wishing to test the waters and see what all the fuss is about. In this class you’ll learn the basics of knitting; how to read a pattern, casting on and binding off, knit and purl stitches, how to change colors, and some basic seaming. You’ll walk away from the class with a snazzy pair of fingerless mitts or an attractive wash cloth! We’ll help you choose the appropriate materials at the beginning of the class. $30, plus cost of materials.

Five Points Shawl
Sunday, August 15 and 22, 1-3 pm

Erica came up with this versatile project - it can worn as a wrap or a shrug. Will this be your first blush with lace? Perfect! The 5 Points Shawl is ideal for a beginner lace project! Additionally, this shawl can easily be completed with just one skein of fingering weight yarn.
$30, not including cost of supplies.

Fair Isle Christmas Stocking
Tuesday, August 17, 24, 31 6-8pm

Every year it happens - Christmas rolls around and I see these beautiful stockings and I’m struck with jealously. Why didn’t I think of that five months ago??!!
This year is different - I’m making my own! Join Hannah and Erica and create a (soon-to-be) heirloom Fair Isle Christmas Stocking. This is a great project to learn Fair Isle color work. You’ll become familiar with interpreting color work charts and learn how to design your own fair isle stitch pattern. Those of you not feeling quite as intrepid have nothing to fear - there are hundreds and hundreds of color work patterns to choose from. The stocking has similar construction to a sock and you’ll learn how to make an "Afterthought Heel." You’ll also feel so virtuous! This project is perfect for using up stash yarn and you can use odds and ends for embellishment. Your stocking will be personalized in every way!

$45, not including cost of supplies.

Intro to Continental Knitting
Saturday, August 14, 2-4pm

While every style of knitting has its own merits and weaknesses, there are some differences that set Continental knitting apart. Continental knitting requires fewer hand movements to form each stitch and can potentially be more efficient - especially for stockinette in the round! Continental knitting utilizes different muscles and postures which can lessen strain and problems associated with repetitive stress. It’s also a helpful skill when doing stranded colorwork.
$15, bring some worsted weight, pale colored yarn and appropriately sized straight needles, and some 16" circulars (sized for working with worsted weight yarn)

Learn to Crochet
Saturday, August 21 and 28, 12-2pm

Learn the basics of crochet in 2 sessions with Jamie. This class is perfect for knitters who would like to add some basic crochet to their arsenal - (think seaming, borders). Crochet comes in handy with lots of knitting projects but it’s also a fantastic and practical stand-alone craft. No experience, no problem, $30.

Introduction to Estonian Lace
Saturday, Aug. 21 and Sept. 4, 3-5pm

Nancy Bush’s latest book Knitted Lace of Estonia has spurred a great interest in the handicraft. Join Maria to for a brief history of this Estonia handcraft, centered around the seaside village of Haapsalu. Estonianpatterns popularize the nupp technique, creation of a small flower bud
Maria will cover interesting textural accents (nupps and more) and help you choose a design motif. Estonian lace often features gorgeous edgings, and you’ll see how stitches for the edging are picked up around the shawl and then worked all around, away from the shawl. There’s also a wildly elastic bind-off that eliminates the need to tie off your yarn. This should not be the participants’ first lace project. We’d like you to be somewhat familiar with the lace knitting (beginners - check out the 5 Points Shawl class with Erica!). $30.

2 Toe Up Socks - knit at the same time!
Wednesday, Aug. 11, 18, and Sept. 1, 6-8pm

Forever eliminate the scourge of SSS, Second Sock Syndrome! Maria, Wooly Bully’s guru on this technique, will teach you how to work 2 socks simultaneously on 1 long circular needle starting from the toe up. Why two at once? It’s easier to match patterns when using self-striping yarn and you’re guaranteed two socks that are more or less the same size. Since you’ll be working them from the toe-up there’s no risk of running out of yarn! Maria will have a stitch pattern that you can work the socks in to make the project a little tangy, but you can also stick to basics with a utilitarian rib. This class will meet three times.
Note: Participants should already familiar with basic sock construction, $45.
Supplies: 100g fingering weight yarn, one 40" or 47" circular needle in your preferred sock knitting size, probably size US 0-3 (to get desired gauge with fingering weight)

Just in time to usher in the new season, Spring yarns have started arriving at the shop: Ruca (100% sugarcane), Antu (100% cotton), and Chaiten (100% silk) from Araucania, Ty-Dy Cotton, and Sekku, a new lace-weight from Noro. Crochet a Clapochet

Saturday, March 13 and 27, 3-5 pm
The crocheted Clapochet is worked on the diagonal, with chain spaces peppered throughout to create a texture similar to the original Clapotis. If variegated yarn is used, it will stripe with the texture and the final result is just as versatile as the original in that it may be scrunched up and worn as a scarf or spread out and worn as a shawl. This is a great project for advanced beginner crocheters wanting to expand on their skills.
Materials: 650 yds worsted weight yarn, G-J hook - ~500 yds fingering weight yarn, C-F hook
May we suggest… Araucania Ruca (100% sugar cane) or Araucania Chaiten (100% silk), Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock or Noro Silk Garden Sock

Cabled Hat

Tuesday, March 23 and 30, 6-8pm
Are you ready to advance from flat, back-and-forth knitting to something with more dimension? Your instructor, Erica, will teach you to knit in the round using circular and double pointed needles as you fashion a classic ribbed beanie. Additionally, you’ll explore how to use decreases to shape the crown. There’s also a cabled option for those of you wishing to try something else new. These beanies make great last-minute gifts. Be forewarned, when your friends and family see your completed beanie, they’ll certainly want one too.
Participants should be comfortable casting on, knitting, and purling. $30, not including cost of supplies.
Supplies: 120-150 yds worsted-weight yarn, 16" US 7-8 circular needles, US 7-8 double pointed needles (7" length)

Beginning Knitting with Reagan

Entrelac Socks

Saturday, March 20 and 27, 12-2pm
Entrelac - French for interwoven. Join Hannah and Maria for this tangy sock class, the next project in our Year of Socks. Entrelac creates the illusion of knitted bands woven like a basket.
Entrelac is so intriguing - is it woven? Is it seamed? No! This technique is not only fun to work but creates a striking finished effect that is certainly worth the effort. This project can involve lots of turning so we’ll learn a trick that will always keep the right side facing you, eliminating the need to turn.
We ask that participants have experience making socks. Beginners should look for a Learn to Knit Socks class that will be offered in the future, $30.
Supplies: 100g fingering weight yarn, dpn/2circs/1 really long circ needle(s) US 1-3

May we suggest… A yarn that has long color repeats really shows off the entrelac patterning. Noro Silk Garden Sock, Jojoland Melody Superwash, and Knit 1 Crochet Too’s Ty-Dy Sock are all excellent choices.

Disaster Recovery + Crisis Management

Saturday, March 20 , 3-5pm
Just when you think all is lost and your only recourse is to rip it all out, relax - there is a better way. The purpose of this class is to learn how to identify errors and correct them.
Topics to be covered include: dealing with dropped and twisted stitches, tinking and frogging, encountering too many or too few stitches, complications with your cables, and even correcting your lacework. While knowing how to correct mistakes is quite an achievement on its own, we’ll teach you a few tricks to keep them from happening in the first place. We’ll have a series of swatches ready for you to work on, $20.
Bring a crochet hook (something like a US size D or E) and size US 7 needles (straights, circs, your choice), and a little patience.

World’s Largest Knitted Poem

The Poetry Society rolled out its giant centenary poem at the British Library, London, on 7 October 2009. Revealed in its full glory, the eye-popping, 13 x 9 metre, hand-knitted version of Dylan Thomas’s ‘In my Craft or Sullen Art’ stopped passers-by in their tracks and quickly drew an admiring crowd. The poem is the work of more than one thousand knitters and crocheters worldwide, who furiously clicked needles and hooks throughout September, to turn the individual letters of Thomas’s poem into colourful 12-inch squares.

We hope you’ll swing by the shop to see us this month. Look out for April’s calendar with our classes for a Top-Down Cardigan, Mother’s Lacey Socks, Crocheted Inga Bag, and steeking - among others!

Which of these two buttons?

I don’t usually use this site as a venue for my own work, both because, well, it’s really the shop’s blog. And also, there’s Ravelry for that.

But I haven’t seen any knitters in the flesh for actual weeks! And there’s no guarantee that I will for several weeks more. And I miss you guys. So, as I have learned through thousands of dollars and dozens of hours worth of grad school to phrase it, I have decided to use the internet as a tool of communication through which to communicate with my peers and community of practice. That’s fancy library-school talk for; what do y’all think?

The tan one (which is sort of an iridescent tan, if there’s such a thing)?

Or the turquoise one (which is similarly shiny and pretty)?

Or even, because I’m fudging a pattern (this one, if you’re interested) into worsted that was originally written for bulky yarn and needles, and I think I made the overlapping tab a bit too long; both?

Diagonale Scarf/Wrap/Shawl

Tuesday, February 16 and 23, 6-8pm
Join us in creating this lovely intermediate level lace wrap! It is a traveling & charted pattern, so even if you feel like you have tackled lace before, there’s sure to be something new & interesting for you. You’ll love the drape created by the diagonal lace design. You can use a lace weight or a fingering weight yarn for this project, and the bully is full of new lace yarns from exotic cashmere to organic cotton & everything in between, any of which would be lovely with this pattern.

You’ll need to be comfortable with knitting, purling & have a little bit of lace experience before taking this class. You can look forward to learning to read a lace chart, use increases & decreases as design elements, use lifelines, & get some lace blocking tips, $30.

Supplies for shawl: 950 yd lace weight yarn, US 7 needle - beautiful results can also be achieved using a fingering weight yarn - a shorter (less than 60") or more narrow (less than 18") version will use proportionally less yarn.

Stash Eliminating Scarf

Wednesday, February 17, 6-8pm
What to do with the odds and ends leftover from holiday knitting? Make a gorgeous, multi-colored scarf! Not only is it beautiful on each side, it’s self fringing and looks great using any color combination. Bring your scraps and stash in varying weights - you’ll stick with more or less the same weight yarn throughout your scarf but you may want to trade with your classmates! Next, pick one yarn as your base - it will be used throughout the project for a unifying effect. Don’t have that much stash lingering around? Not to worry! This pattern looks great in using three plus variegated yarns. Students must know how to knit and purl, $10.
Supplies: For fingering weight scarf - US 6 circular needle (24"-36"),
~450 yds fingering weight yarn
(We can help you estimate yarn and needle requirements for other yarn weights.)

Thanksgiving Hours and Post-Pie Sale

Just a quick note to let people know, we will be closed on Thursday, November 26 for Thanksgiving.

We will be open again on Friday and Saturday for normal operating hours. We’ll be providing warm cider, coffee, and treats for the weary shopper. Stop by to take a break from all the madness going on in the outside world, to get a head start on your Christmas projects, and take advantage of some new sale items. It’s not precisely Black Friday….more like Heathered, Tweedy, Mohair-y Friday. A lot of different things are going to be on sale from 10-40 % off.

Wednesday, November 11 and 18, 6-8 pm Once you start making these booties, you can’t stop. They make a wonderful last-minute gift. Learn how to make an adorable pair of baby shoes in this class with Hannah. The booties are entirely knit - no purls to speak of! Basic seaming will transform your flat piece of knitting into a little shoe. Participants should be comfortable with knitting basics: casting on, binding off, knitting. $25 + cost of supplies

Beginning Knitting Saturday, November 14th & 21st, 3-5pm

If you’ve never picked up needles before, you’re a little rusty and want some review, or you want an opportunity to work on a simple project with a coach, this is the class for you! Join Regan for this two-part introduction to knitting. You’ll learn about casting on and binding off, knitting and purling, changing colors and seaming. Part of the class is instruction on how to select yarn and compatible needles, so you may purchase all materials at the time of class. Your final product with be a cozy pair of fingerless mitts. Introduction to Needle Felting: Making Ornaments Sunday, November 22, 2-4pm Discover how to exploit the properties of wool and the mechanics of felting to create a 3D figure/object of your choice and a Christmas ornament (or a festive orb - depending on your holiday persuasion). Erica will teach you how to take roving (unspun wool) or any wool yarn and create beautiful felted pieces with a barbed needle. Needle felting can be used to add accents to knitwear, cloth or felted accessories. We’ll show you the basics, then how to use needle felting in projects such as bags or clothing. $30, materials included, no experience necessary.

Block of the Month Monday, November 16, 6-8pm

This super-easy, super-quick shawl is knit from the neck down. Work with a thinner yarn and bigger needles for a lacey effect, thicker yarn for something cozy and warm, or experiment with colors and make it striped - we’ll help you explore these options. Since it is constructed from the neck down, you can make it as long or short as you’d like. The shawlette is all garter stitch so once again, there’s no purls to speak of! You’ll learn a popular set-up seen in neck-down shawls and how to make eyelets. It’s fast, fun, and makes a wonderful gift (for yourself or another). Participants must know how to cast on and off, and knit, $25 + cost of supplies.

Double Knitting Scarf or Potholder Monday, November 23 and 30, 6- 8pm Double knitting allows you to make flat-lying pieces that are stockinette stitch on both sides, wonderful for scarves and belts. It also produces a double layered fabric, great for cozy items. Heather will guide you through making a double knit scarf or a potholder - you can pick a smaller size project or something a bit larger. Either way, this will make a great gift. You’ll be able to choose from a several different designs - just a few are seen below. Participants must know how to knit, purl, cast on, bind off. $25 + cost of supplies.

Tropical Depression Beanie

Saturday, November 14 and 21, 12-2pm Tired of knitting flat projects? Move into 3-D realm with this handsome hat.You’ll learn to knit in the round using circular needles and how to decrease & shape the crown using double pointed needles. The distinctive swirling pattern is achieved using an increase stitch. It makes a great gift for the upcoming holiday season. Participants must know how to cast on, knit and purl for this class, $25.

Design Your Own Class

Want a class that you haven’t seen on our class schedule? Do you have a friend that wants to take it with you?

1. Pick a topic, pattern, or project you would like to have a class for.

2. Find a few friends, co-workers, or family members to take it with you.

3. Contact us by email hannah.woolybully@gmail.com with the following information: who, what, and when.

4. We will work with you and let you know about how many hours we think the class will take and find a teacher.

A note about classes

- There is a minimum of two students in each class.

- In order to guarantee your placement in a class full payment is required upon registration.

- All student cancellations must be received no later than 48 hours before your class meets and you will be placed in the next available session or given a refund in the form of a store gift card.

- In the case of a last-minute cancellation or a no-show we will be unable to issue a refund. - We reserve the right to cancel a class in the event of instructor illness, low enrollment, and other emergency situations, issuing you a refund in the form of a store gift card. New News on our Afghans for Afghans Drive

Hey all,

First of all, We want to thank everyone that has contributed to Afghans for Afghans so far. We are doing great, and want to really push on through to make our local Tallahassee contribution really great, especially this year. To that end, the Bully is doing 2 things for A4A; we’re collecting hand knit and crochet items AND we’re making a shop Lizard Ridge to be raffled off and the money donated to A4A to help to cover their shipping costs.

Now for the point system:

The way this is going to work is that at the end of November, when all is said and done and we’ve finished collecting all the A4A items, we’re going to put names in a hat. 1 point = your name once in the hat. There are different “points” attributed to different items. here goes:

5 points:
Baby Blanket (30 inches by 40 inches minimum)
Adult Sweater

4 points:
Child sweater (age 5 and up)
Child pants
Adult vest

3 points:
Baby sweater (like Erica’s beautiful Firefly)
Baby pants
Child vest

2 points:
Baby vest
1 pair of full size adult socks (not footies)
1 pair of adult mittens/gloves

1 point:
1 Noro Lizard Ridge Square (unblocked please)
1 pair baby socks
1 pair baby mittens/gloves

A few reminders:

A4A this year is really stressing Baby Blankets.
Everything knit and crocheted for A4A must be made of natural fiber, such as wool or alpaca.
No scarves.
No baby booties.
No graphical representation of people or things on the donations please, these items will be unusable.
No Camoflage (for obvious reasons).
A4A has loads of FREE great patterns available if you need inspiration! You can find them on their website.

New into the shop this week: we just received a massive shipment of Cascade 220, 220 Heathers, and Heritage Sock yarns that are being crammed into the shelves every day. We hope to see many of you local Cascade fans in the shop soon to check it out!

Through the holidays we will be featuring many classes oriented around pithy, quick projects, items requiring only a single skein of yarn and projects that are sure to make coveted gifts. Colorwork Socks
Tuesday, October 13 + 20, 6-8 pm

Do you like owls? Do you like socks? Then what could be better than Owl Socks?
In this class, we will look at various techniques for knitting with two colors, as you create a tangy pair of owl socks. You’ll learn how to follow a chart. Knitting stranded colorwork for socks (Fair Isle technique) can be tricky, because it is a less elastic fabric than a regular knit. In this class, we will discuss strategies for compensating for this lack of elasticity and how to keep your tension even.
Students need to know how to knit socks and be able to knit in the round, $25.

Introduction to Needle Felting
Wednesday, October 14, 6-8 pm

Discover how to exploit the properties of wool and the mechanics of felting to create a 3D figure/object of your choice. Erica will teach you how to take roving (unspun wool) or any wool yarn and create beautiful felted pieces with a barbed needle. Needle felting can be used to add accents to knitwear, cloth or felted accessories. We’ll show you the basics, then how to use needle felting in projects such as bags or clothing. $30, materials included, no experience necessary.

Lizard Ridge Block
Saturday, October 17, 3-5 pm

We’ll get you started on your first Lizard Ridge Block - it can be the first installment towards a blanket, a trivet, or make another and you have a pillow! The legendary Lizard Ridge Blanket is worked incrementally, block by block. We’ll create the unique, wavy pattern with short rows and changing yarns. After knitting the square takes on a bumpy, egg crate-like appearance. We’ll practive several blocking techniques that will come in handy for smoothing your Lizard Ridge Block and be useful with many other knitted projects we well. Most often, the blocks are knit with Noro Kureyon, known for their amazing color combos. This pattern takes advantage of their lengthy color runs for an stunning effect. Note: participants must know how to cast on and bind off, knit and purl, $20.

Crochet Edging + Seaming
Sunday, October 18, 2-4pm

If you are participating in our Block of the Month class, you won’t want to miss out on this session! You’ll learn how to crochet around each block to create a unified color palette. Using crochet stitches to seam your work will come together beautifully without bulky seams on the backside (that can detract from all the hard work you have put into your afghan!). You’ll love how quickly your blocks will start to come together after learning just a few basics. While this class is targeted to Block of the Month-ers, this is a useful skill for anyone and we encourage you to join along (any Lizard Ridgers out there?). No crochet experience necessary, $20.

Fingerless Mitts
Monday, October 19 and Tuesday, October 27, 6-8pm

Fingerless mitts are a staple throughout the autumn and winter and make wonderful presents to friends and loved ones. Learn how to knit in the round and construct a thumb gusset. Worked in a worsted weight yarn, this project will move along swiftly. You can make the mitts as long as you’d like but you can make a shorter pair with just one skein of Worsted Malabrigo. Those of you wishing to make their mitts a bit more interesting, we’ll offer you a few different stitch patterns to add some texture and dimension. Participants must know how to cast on, bind off, knit and purl, $25.

Beginning Knitting
Saturday, October 17 + 24, 12-2pm

Button Tab Hat
Wednesday, October 21 + 28, 6-8 pm

Looking to take your knitting to the next level? This is a great opportunity for you to expand your knitting ability beyond the basics. Erica will demonstrate how to take chunky yarn and big needles to create this quick and cozy hat. The added button tab adds a little extra flair. You’ll learn to knit in the round using circular needles and how to decrease & shape the crown using double pointed needles. It makes a great gift for the upcoming holiday season. Our shop sample was completed with only one skein of Araucania Coliumo Multy (70% Wool, 30% Silk) - so it’s decadent and affordable project! Participants must know how to knit and purl before registering for this class, $25.

Log Cabin Washcloths
Saturday, October 24, 3-5pm

The basic Log Cabin method is to start with a central patch, and attach strips around it in concentric layers. After you’ve done a few layers, a pattern emerges that resembles the construction of a log cabin, in which the logs are notched so that they interlock at the corners. You’ll get to play with fun color combos and learn about picking up stitches.

The Log Cabin design is sweet with a vintage flair. Knit all in garter stitch, the process is rhythmic and soothing. This is a great project for newbies just starting out and veterans who seem to return to it again and again. A trio (or quartet) of these washcloths would make a lovely gift along with some handmade soap. Particpants must know how to cast on, bind off, and knit, $20.

Block of the Month/Intarsia Block
Monday, October 26, 6-8pm

Add one more colorwork technique to your repertoire while knitting a cheerful chicken design! You won’t find any funky strands of yarn on the backside of this piece of knitting! We’ll use some of our embellishment ideas from our September block to add finishing touches to this design. Additionally, you’ll learn how to create your own colorful designs for future projects. Even if you aren’t working towards an entire afghan, this workshop with Erica will be a wonderful introduction to the intarsia method! $20.
