August/September ‘09 Wooly Bulletin

Greetings!

We have a lot of information to share with you this month - upcoming classes, our Fall Afghan for Afghan activities, and our Labor Day Sale!

Learn to Knit Socks
Tuesday, September 8, 15, and 22, 6-8pm

Have you always wanted to learn to knit socks?  Or do you knit socks but wish you didn’t have to deal with all the double pointed needles?  Now is your chance!  We’ll teach you how to knit a cozy & comfy sock from the cuff to the toe using 2 circular needles.  You’ll never have to use double pointed needles again after learning this method of knitting!  You’ll soon realize what all the buzz is about with knitting socks. Erica will offer both a worsted and sock weight version of the socks.
You must know how to knit & purl and how to work in the round before registering for this class, $35.

Entrelac Scarf

Entrelac Wrap
Wednesday, September 9, 6-8pm and Saturday, September 12, 12-2 pm

During this class you’ll learn all the twists & turns of entrelac knitting as you work your way through this beautiful scarf or wrap.  You’ll love using Noro’s Silk Garden yarn for this project, as the colors change & enhance the changing directions of your knitting. This project makes a gorgeous gift for someone very special or a unique piece to keep for yourself.
Participants must know how to knit & purl before registering for this class, $25.

Classic Ribbed Beanie
Monday, August 24 and 31, 6-8pm, $25

Are you ready to advance from flat, back-and-forth knitting to something with more dimension? Your instructor, Glen, will teach you to knit in the round using circular and double pointed needles as you fashion a classic ribbed beanie. Additionally, you’ll explore how to use decreases to shape the crown. There’s also a cabled option for those of you wishing to try something else new. These beanies make great last-minute gifts. Be forewarned, when your friends and family see your completed beanie, they’ll certainly want one too.

Participants should be comfortable knitting, purling, and casting on.

Woodland Shawl
Saturday, September 12 and October 3

Maria will teach you all the basic lace stitches in class, hints and tricks when working with lace, and even cover blocking methods. Need more convincing? The shawl is attractive on both sides, the pattern easy to memorize, and it’s never too early to start working on holiday gifts for your nearest and dearest.

Afghans for Afghans

As in years past, we will once again be participating in the Afghans for Afghans charity/philanthropy this Fall. afghans for Afghans is a humanitarian and educational people-to-people project that sends hand-knit and crocheted blankets and sweaters, vests, hats, mittens, and socks to the people of Afghanistan. Wooly Bully plans to collect these hand knit items and wrap them up and send them to the aforA headquarters. This is a perfect opportunity to tear through your personal yarn stash. Specific guidelines can be found on the afghans for Afghans website. Please read over them carefully.

Wooly Bully is offering you an incentive to participate - for every item turned in you will receive a chance to win a drawing for a set of HiyaHiya Interchangeable Needles and two skeins of 100% Cashmere yarn (you pick the color!). If you contribute larger items, you will have your name entered for the drawing in proportion to the size and scope of the item turned in. (yes, a pair of socks or mittens counts as just one item)

As an adjunct to collecting hand knit items, we plan on raffling off a Lizard Ridge Blanket. We will be receiving knitted Lizard Ridge Squares (from those of you wishing to make one) and then some Wooly Bullies will block them, arrange them, and seam up the blanket.
- For every Lizard Ridge square turned in we will give you a coupon for $5 off your next purchase of $25 or more.
It’s imperative we receive your blocks no later than Wednesday, September 30th, so we’re given adequate time to seam the squares and assemble a gorgeous Lizard Ridge Blanket.
- Noro Kureyon or Noro Silk Garden may be used
- Your square should measure exactly 12" x 12"

The more detailed aspects of the Lizard Ridge project will be posted on the Wooly Bully website shortly.
For those of you with any questions, feel free to contact Glen Oakes or Heather Rubino. Hand outs will also be available at the shop.

June ‘09 Wooly Bulletin
Greetings!

This listing of June ‘09 classes has arrived a little later than we would have preferred. Things have been hectic in the Wooly Bully world and we are grateful for your patience and understanding. We hope to see you at one of the classes we’re offering this month. Be sure to read about some of the new items in the shop - and look out for a special invitation in your inbox very, very soon!!

Rectangular Shawl

Rectangular Shawl

The Rectangular Shawl model from Blue Sky Alpacas was a huge hit at the Trunk Show/Birthday Party and many of you requested a class or knit-along for it. While the shawl bears some similarity to the well-known Clapotis, this shawl doesn’t have a “right” or “wrong” side! We will show you how you can modify the pattern to make it more narrow and scarf-like. The Shawl has a subtle, delicate crocheted edge that is perfectly suited for this refined shawl. It’s a great introductory lace pattern - good for those wishing to venture outside of stockinette and garter stitch. We’ve had customers knit it with an alpaca-silk blend, 100% bamboo, and a merino-silk blend - each one is exquisite with its own personality. Depending on what yarn you choose, it can be an appropriate garment for any season.
Mondays, June 29th and July 20th, 6-8 pm, $25

Rectangular Shawl Edging

Minimalist Cardigan

This is one attractive, sophisticated sweater! Dress it up or go casual! The pattern flatters many shapes and sizes - sized for chest measurements of 34″ to 52 1/2″. The Minimalist Cardigan is knit in allover moss stitch. The designer, Ruthie Nussbaum planned the three-quarter sleeves with a completely straight silhouette: The lower edges blouse slightly above snug ribbing for casual polish. The model  in the shop is knit from Blue Sky’s Dyed Skinny Cotton, making it perfect for warmer weather - although many other fibers would be appropriate candidates to work with (Malabrigo Silky Merino??!). Participants will learn how to slightly alter patterns to ensure a well-fitting garment. We’ll wrap it up by covering blocking and seaming knitted pieces.
Wednesday, June 17th, July 1st, and July 15th, July 29th
6-8pm, $45

Grrlfriend Market Bag

The pattern for this bag, written by designer Laura Spradlin, says that projects like the Grrlfriend Market Bag are meant to be symbolic of what girlfriends do for each other.  Whether it be carrying someone’s groceries, laundry, birthday presents, or anything else that they need some help with, this Market Bag is destined to help you or a recipient shoulder some burdens.  While this may seem like a tall order, I think that this cute-but-sturdy shoulder sack is capable of carrying all this and more.  This pattern is worked from the bottom up, and unlike most marketing bag patterns, features a flat bottom.  This is an excellent project for intermediate knitters who have progressed beyond scarves and hats are are looking for a few new skills to add to their knitting repertoire.  You will learn some of the first steps in knitting (easy) lace, changing needles throughout a pattern, and grafting. You must know how to knit, purl, and knit in the round before taking this class
Monday, June 15th and 22nd
6-8pm, $25

June ‘09 Block of the Month

Our Block of the Month members are making wonderful progress on their afghans so far!  We’ll continue to keep it up through the rest of the year & starting in the Fall, we’ll begin our Seaming workshops to help us turn these blocks into a really nice afghan.  If you have missed out on this opportunity, there is still a chance for you to get in on the fun.  Each Block we offer becomes increasingly more complex each month, so don’t wait much longer.  This is a perfect chance to learn a lot of new knitting techniques without getting into several different projects at once.  Come by the shop & let us get you started on catching up on the blocks you’ve missed.  June’s block pattern is Charted Lace!

One last thought…
Two weekends from now I will be at the TNNA Market in Columbus, Ohio - (a friend thinks it should be called YarnCon)! If there’s anything I absolutely must investigate while there, let me know. I can’t wait to bring back all sorts of new goodies for the shop!!

May ‘09 Wooly Bulletin!

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Greetings!
This coming month is going to be great - we’re expecting imminent deliveries from Malabrigo, Jojoland, and Alpaca with a Twist - and we look forward to sharing these wonderful fibers with you. Look for updates here on the blog!  You’ll want to come as soon as these shipments arrive for best selection.

For those of you who may have encountered a stumbling block mid-project or those of you wishing to start a new project, call the shop and make an appointment with one of our Knitting or Crochet Wizards. You can meet with them for a brief “check up” or a lengthier tete-a-tete. Their fees are reasonable. Their knowledge is priceless.

I also want to let everyone know that we are again offering gift certificates - and just in time for Mother’s Day. Be sure to pick one up in the denomination of your choice - or tell your friends and family to get one for you!

Classes

Learn to Knit with Erica
Saturday, May 23 and 30, 2-4 pm, $25
Join Erica for this two-part introduction to knitting. This class is perfect for those who want to learn to knit, as well as those who already have some basic knowledge but would like a “refresher” on the subject. You’ll learn about yarn and needle selection, casting on and off, knitting and purling, changing colors and seaming. Your final product with be a cozy pair of fingerless mitts. You’ll leave the class prepared to embark on further knitting adventures.

Kestrel Socks with Erica
Wednesday, May 13, 20, & 27, 6-8 pm, $30
Kestrel is a great sock project for any knitter who has a basic knowledge of sock knitting. If you have created a worsted weight sock in our beginning sock class, then this would be a great next step. During this class you will knit a sock using sock weight yarn on US 2 needles, (either dpns or circulars), whatever you are more comfortable with. You’ll learn to incorporate a basic lace pattern into your sock and how to knit a short row heel. This class is not intended to teach you how to knit socks, you should already have some experience knitting socks before registering for this class.

MAY Block of the Month
Monday, May 18, 6-8 pm, $20
If you haven’t joined the Knit Along, perhaps now is the time. Erica will lead you and your fellow participants in mastering new techniques as you complete a block for your blanket.

Baby Bobbi Bear
Tuesday, May 19 & June 2, 6-8 pm, $25
We’ve loved having our Bobbi Bear in the shop (although this one is a somewhat smaller version). We’ll make his limbs and body using double pointed and circular needles. He’s cleverly constructed so you only have to make two small seams! Although the final Baby Bobbi Bear is approx. 15” in length, this is a quick, fun knitting project. This could become your default knitted present for babies and children (or anyone needing a soft, cuddly friend). This class is appropriate for advanced beginners.

Fisherman’s Lace Wrap

Monday, May 25, 6-8 pm, $15
Learn some basic lace stitches in this one-time class. This class is ideal as a first blush with lace and a very quick project. Make it as a scarf and you’ll finish it even more quickly.

Hope to see you guys in May!
