Greetings Friends!

There have been so many deliveries this past month! From Cascade we’ve received an infusion of Cascade 220 SuperwashChunky Baby AlpacaHeritageEco Wool and Eco +. We’re now carrying a decadent, worsted-weight Royal Alpaca from Aslan Trends.Malabrigo has two new yarns: a super bulky Merino called Rasta(think Burly Spun but with Malabrigo’s softness) and Rios, a 4 ply superwash Merino! We have a Bamboo Velvet, with the luster of silk and the softness of chenille. A hand-painted Mulberry Silk is moving fast - we’re in love with it’s vibrant colors and sheen! We invite you to come by the shop to see even more from Manos del UruguaySirdarNoro, and Dill Buttons!

We hope you find a class or two that piques your interest!

Learn to Knit Socks
Tuesday, Nov. 23 and 30, and Dec. 7, 6-8 pm
Join Maria to learn the basics of sock making! They work up quickly with a medium weight yarn and can soon serve as a treasured holiday gift. Double Pointed Needles are the most common way of knitting small diameter objects in the round. In this class, you will master knitting in the round, turning the heel (easier than it sounds!), working a gusset & closing up a toe with a grafting stitch. There are lots of techniques involved in knitting a sock and you will find lots of other opportunities to use your newly learned skills, $45.
Materials: 100 g worsted weight yarn, US 3-5 dpns

How to Knit a Beanie
Monday, December 13 and 20, 6-8pm
Are you ready to advance from flat, back-and-forth knitting to something with more dimension? Your instructor, Erica, will teach you to knit in the round using circular and double pointed needles as you fashion a classic ribbed beanie. Additionally, you’ll explore how to use decreases to shape the crown. There’s also a cabled option for those of you wishing to try something else new. These beanies make great last-minute gifts. Be forewarned, when your friends and family see your completed beanie, they’ll certainly want one too.
Participants should be comfortable casting on, knitting, and purling. $30, not including cost of supplies.
Supplies: 120-150 yds worsted-weight yarn, 16" US 7-8 circular needles, US 7-8 double pointed needles (7" length)

Fingerless Mitts
Monday, November 29 and December 6, 6-8pm
Fingerless mitts are a staple throughout the autumn and winter and make wonderful presents to friends and loved ones. Learn how to knit in the round and construct a thumb gusset. Worked in a worsted weight yarn, this project will move along swiftly. You can make the mitts as long as you’d like but you can make a shorter pair with just one skein of worsted-weight Malabrigo Rios (it’s their new superwash merino!). Those of you wishing to make their mitts a bit more interesting, we’ll offer you a few different stitch patterns to add some texture and dimension. Participants must know how to cast on, bind off, knit and purl, $30.

Woodland Shawl
Wednesday, December 1 and 8, 6-8pm
If you’ve seen Maria’s finished piece in the shop, you know how stunning the Woodland Shawl is. This is a nice pattern to work with whether you are a veteran of lacework or a novice. Maria will teach you all the basic lace stitches in class, hints and tricks when working with lace, and even cover blocking methods. Need more convincing? The shawl is attractive on both sides, the pattern easy to memorize, and it’s not too late to start for a Christmas gift.
Participants should be able to cast on, knit and purl comfortably, $30.
Supplies: 400 yds fingering weight yarn (try Madelinetosh Prairie) US 6 needles or 600 yds dk weight yarn (like Malabrigo Merino Silk, as pictured below)

It’s a stunner….

Grace Knitted Beret
Saturdays, December 4 and 11, 2-4pm
Every clothing store I’ve been to this fall has cute knitted hats similar to the Grace Beret, but they are mass-manufactured and lack a certain grace that hand-knitted items offer. Thoughtful design and quality materials make this a hat that you will be proud to wear or give over & over. And it’s a perfect first lace project! $30.

Supplies: 220 yds DK weight yarn (think Blue Sky’s Alpaca Silk, Classic Elite’s Soft Linen or Wool Bamboo, Manos del Uruguay’s Serena or Sirdar’s Snuggly Baby Bamboo), US 4 DPNS

US 9 16" circs and DPNs (or whatever size you need to achieve gauge of 4 sts = 1" in lace pattern)

Alternative Calorimetry
 Sunday, December 5 and 12, 2-4pm
The Alternative Calorimetry is a new take on the original design. Instead of using a heavy worsted weight yarn, we will use a sock weight yarn to create a fine fabric. The finer fabric lends itself to more versatility in using the calorimetry in Florida climate. It keeps your ears warm & its pretty darn cute. Students in this class will learn to use short rows to shape their fabric (a nice skill for every knitter’s toolbag) and they will create a quick project perfect for gift giving this holiday season, $30.

Check out the sample at the shop or check out the class post in Friends of the Bully group on Ravelry!

Needle Felted Ornaments
Tuesday, December 15, 6-8pm
Discover how to exploit the properties of wool and the mechanics of felting to create a 3D figure/object of your choice and a Christmas ornament (or a festive orb - depending on your holiday persuasion). Erica will teach you how to take roving (unspun wool) or any wool yarn and create beautiful felted pieces with a barbed needle. Needle felting can be used to add accents to knitwear, cloth or felted accessories. We’ll show you the basics, then how to use needle felting in projects such as bags or clothing. $30, materials included, no experience necessary.

Cooler months are here and you may be thinking about staying nice and cozy. Bethany urges you to not forget about your beer! This beer cozy will help insulate your drink from the elements and looks crazy cute at the same time. This project is also great for those of you who find a full sized sweater a bit too daunting, $15.

It’s happened to all of us.  Hannah posts the class schedule, you look it over, you get excited about a new yarn, you research a pattern (what did we ever do before Ravelry?  You mean I can look at every single picture of every single knitter who’s ever done the Koolhaas, and what yarn they used?)…..but then, you don’t follow up on it.  You mean to call the shop and register, but it’s Sunday, and the shop doesn’t open again until Tuesday, and by Tuesday you can’t even remember what you had for dinner on Sunday, much less that you had something you needed to do.

Or you do call the shop to register, but apparently every other knitter in Tallahassee has beaten you to the punch.  Or you manage to sign up for one of those spots, but something comes up on the day in question, or no one else actually wanted to knit that object (what, are they blind?) so the instructor cancels, or there was this hurricane….

Like I said, we’ve all been there.  Hannah and the rest of the crew have been discussing what classes should be given a second show.  What was really popular at the time, and we need to address the spillover now?  Or maybe you didn’t see the beauty of something when the pattern was first published, but now that you’ve seen it in someone’s project gallery, knitted up in Noro or Silky Tweed, you’re realizing that you absolutely need it.

We’ve thought of a few that people have requested in the past.

The Falling Waters Wrap, for instance.

Or the February Lady Sweater.

What about the gorgeous Little Slip of a Thing bag?

Or the perennial favorite, Saartje’s Booties?

But we need your help.  We know what we think needs a second go-around, but you guys are the ones who are going to be taking the classes.  Do you have an old favorite, or something that needs refreshing, or have you seen something online that you just can’t believe we’ve never offered?  Tell us.  Take the poll, drop us a comment, send us your thought via an email.  We want to hear from you.
